Happy Spring!

Dear Hawes Families,

Happy Spring! This time of year always brings a wonderful sense of renewal as students continue to grow, learn, and shine.

Our classrooms are busy with exciting learning, creative projects, and opportunities for students to stretch their thinking. Outside, you may notice students enjoying the longer days, connecting with friends, and showing their SOAR expectations - Respect, Own Actions, Kindness, and Ready to Learn.

Spring is also a time to pause and celebrate the progress our students have made this year. Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting learning, kindness, and community here at Hawes.

Celebration - Please take some time to congratulate your child on all they have learned this year. They are all showing great progress both academically, and socially. We appreciate your support at home, to ensure the best possible learning opportunities for your child. Developing strong reading and math foundations show perseverance, and hard work every day. Thank you to our families for your ongoing support and partnership. Together we are helping our students learn, grow, and SOAR. We appreciate all our teachers, and staff, and all that you do, too!

Intent to Return to Hawes Survey
Please take the time to complete the survey if you have not already done so. We are at 94% completion rate. The link is included here for returning TK-5 students. Please click on the link below if your child will be in this grade band for the 2026-2027 school year.

Multitudes - the new K-2 state screener. This short assessment will be used with all K-2 students to check early literacy skills. It will help teachers understand how students are developing important foundations for reading, such as letter recognition, sounds, word awareness, and early decoding skills. The screener is quick and age-appropriate and helps teachers identify students who may benefit from extra support or targeted instruction. The goal is to strengthen early reading skills so all students can grow as confident readers. This is not a graded test, but a tool to help guide instruction and support student learning. You have the right to waive your child out of this screener by sending me an email (fhansell@hbcsd.us), or a note to your child's teacher by 4/3/26. otherwise, all K-2 students will take the screener 4/13/26-5/8/26.

In Partnership Always,

Dr. Fran Hansell

A Message From Hawes ‘Y’ and Director Matthew Pellet

All-Inclusive Summer Adventure Awaits at the YMCA!

Our 2026 Summer Day Camp is designed as an All-Inclusive Pass to discovery, growth, friendship building and high-energy excitement.

  • Weekly Skill-Building Clubs: From artistic innovation to engineering, our "club" style blocks allow campers to dive deep into specific interests and develop real-world talents.
  • STEM & Strategic Thinking: Whether they are participating in "Code Quests" or "The Great Build Off," your child will engage in daily hands-on STEM challenges.
  • Leadership Development & Service Learning: We empower our campers to lead! Through our service learning projects, kids gain "social agency" by giving back to their local community.
  • Weekly Championships: Every Friday, we celebrate our progress with "Playoff" challenges to make your child shine.

Field trips and ten themes all summer long! Space is limited and filling fast!

PBIS Kindness & Inclusion Reminder

At Hawes, we continue to encourage students to show our SOAR expectations each day - Respect, Own Actions, Always Be Kind, and Ready to Learn. One important way students can demonstrate kindness is by including others in games and conversations during recess and throughout the school day.

We remind students that school is a place where everyone belongs, and small acts of kindness - inviting someone to play, sharing equipment, or using respectful words - help create a positive environment for all.

Thank you for reinforcing these messages at home and helping us build a caring and inclusive school community.

THANK YOU for doing all you can to bring your child to school every day and to minimize the amount of time they are absent due to vacations etc. We appreciate you taking trips during non-student days whenever possible.

Independent Study Contracts If your child is going to be absent from school due to vacation/or travel for four (4) or more days, please contact the school office to request an Independent Study Contract. Please understand that we need at least two weeks prior to the start date of the absence in order to prepare materials. Here are some key points to remember:
  • Independent Study Contracts are requested through Monica Jagiello (mjagiello@hbcsd.us) in the office.
