Learning Link: Where Early Learning Begins, Together
At Huntington Beach City School District (HBCSD), early learning begins long before a child ever steps into a kindergarten classroom. It starts with play, connection, and meaningful moments shared between children and the adults who care for them. That philosophy is at the heart of Learning Link, an early learning and family engagement program designed for children from birth to five years old and the caregivers who support them.
Learning Link, an HBCSD Preschool program, offers families a welcoming space to explore purposeful learning opportunities tailored to each child’s developmental stage. During each session, children and caregivers learn side by side, singing, building, reading, creating, and discovering together, while forming routines that gently introduce children to what learning in a classroom setting feels like.
Throughout the program, facilitators lead both large- and small-group activities modeled after those found in preschool classrooms. Children practice simple routines such as gathering for group time, transitioning between activities, and engaging with peers. These skills help build confidence and ease the transition into preschool and school-age settings.
Families also explore a variety of developmentally appropriate learning stations designed to spark curiosity and encourage interaction. From art and block play to sensory exploration, dramatic “home living” areas, reading spaces, and a dedicated baby area, every station invites children to explore while caregivers learn ways to support growth across multiple developmental areas.
Just as importantly, Learning Link strengthens the bond between caregivers and children. Parents, grandparents, and other caregivers gain ideas they can carry home, turning everyday moments into opportunities for learning, conversation, and connection.
Learning Link isn’t just about preparing children for school, it’s about empowering families, building routines, and laying the foundation for a lifelong love of learning.
