Thank You

Dear Hawes Families,

Thank you so much for attending the Parent Picnics last week. It was lovely to meet you all and chat about the great things happening at our amazing school. We appreciate your ongoing support.

By now, you have likely received the district message about a student seriously injured by the helicopter accident this weekend in Huntington Beach. Our hearts are heavy as we share this information about a student from a neighboring district school. He is receiving medical care, and our thoughts are with him, his family, and his school community during this unimaginable time.

As a Hawes family, we believe in the power of kindness and community. To show our support, we are inviting students (optional, of course) to earn a few dollars through simple chores at home and bring those earnings as a donation from our school. Every small act of giving can bring hope and comfort to this family.

We will be accepting cash or checks (made payable to Hawes Elementary School) through 10/24/25. All donations will be deposited through the district for the family. There is also a public GoFundMe account set up if you prefer to give help that way.

Thank you for joining us in lifting this student and his loved ones with care, hope, and Hawes heart.

We can't wait to celebrate Hawktoberfest after school this week on 10/16/25! Please remember that all students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the duration of the event. This helps us ensure everyone's safety while enjoying the games, food, and fun together as a community.

Thank you for your partnership in making this a safe and memorable event for all of our Hawks!

We look forward to Conferences coming up soon - please make sure you have scheduled a time to meet with your child's teacher to discuss their progress this trimester.

We are proud of our Student Council, under the guidance of Mrs. De Stefano and Mrs. Rocha. They are planning lots of great activities this year. Here are the following monthly Dress Up Days they are sponsoring -

FIRST TRIMESTER
  • October 31 - Crazy Day (wear crazy socks, hair, hats, etc.)
  • November 21 - Western Day (wear your boots, hats, etc.)
  • December 19 - Pajama Day (wear your favorite cozy PJ's)

Thank you for reinforcing the SOAR (Show Respect, Own Your Actions, Always Be Kind, and Ready to Learn) behaviors with your child at home. The consistency will help to instill the values in your child and our partnership is essential in giving a clear and consistent message to all the students. This week we are focusing on Kindness. I am sure there will be many random acts of kindness throughout the week. Check-in with your child to see how they expressed kindness at school this week. Hawes Hawks are doing a great job and it truly takes a village!

In Gratitude,

Dr. Fran Hansell

School Information

Information and Details

Thursdays will be Early Dismissal every week!
TK - 12:10
K/3 - 1:26
4/5 - 1:35
Thank you for making a note of this and for planning to pick your child up on time.

Arrival time no earlier than 8:15 am! Please do not drop off your child early, as there is no supervision. Thank you!

For the month of October, Ms. Samoniantz will be discussing how to “Be a Buddy, Not a Bully” in honor of National Bullying Prevention Month. In addition to reviewing the various types of bullying and what they may look like, we will also be discussing how to be an up-stander when we see unkind actions happen around us. Lastly, we will highlight the importance of kindness and respect, as well as including others here at school.

Parents, please have conversations with your child at home on the importance of being kind to everyone at school and speaking out when they see unkind actions. You can remind them to find a trusted adult at school to help if they feel unsafe. Please reach out to our counselor, Ms. Samoniantz, if you have any questions regarding classroom counselor lessons at asamoniantz@hbcsd.us.

Bikes Please make sure your child always brings a helmet if they are riding their bike to school. Please remind your child to walk their bike on campus and through the park at all times. Thank you for helping us monitor this safety aspect with your child.

Absent? Please contact the office We encourage you to plan your trips over the scheduled breaks. Please make plans for day trips to Disneyland etc. for the weekend. We all understand how difficult it is when we are absent form work and the same holds true for students.

If your child is truly sick, please keep them home. Students must be fever, vomit, and diarrhea free for 24 hours prior to returning to school.

If your child is absent from school, please report this absence by emailing: Hawesattendance@hbcsd.us or calling the school office at : 714.963.8302 then press 1.

Independent Study Contracts If your child is going to be absent from school due to vacation/or travel for four (4) or more days, please contact the school office to request an Independent Study Contract. Please understand that we need at least two weeks prior to the start date of the absence in order to prepare materials. Here are some key points to remember:
  • Independent Study Contracts are requested through Monica Jagiello (mjagiello@hbcsd.us) in the office.
  • By law, the maximum number of days for an independent study are 15 days for the entire school year.
  • In order to receive credit for the absence, ALL work must be completed and returned by the due date.
  • Incomplete independent study contracts result in unexcused absences, which could result in a referral to the Student Attendance Review Board (SARB).
  • Please be respectful of your teachers and staff who spend a great deal of time putting these contracts together.
