The Details for the Week:
Here are some of the key events and things to know:

Dance class is this week.

Water assemblies for grades TK - 2: are scheduled for this Thursday morning. Our students will learn more about water awareness, safety and conservation.

PTSA Dine out Night: at Raising Cane's is on Wednesday from 11 - 9 PM. Check out the information below for more details!

End of attendance month 5: This Friday is the end of attendance month 5. Students who have had perfect attendance - no absences, no tardies, and no early outs - will receive a brag tag for the month! We are hoping to have LOTS of students who earn this recognition since this attendance month is so short!

Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday: is Monday, January 20. This is a school holiday and we are closed.

January MegaSkills Family Activity Challenge is attached . This month we will focus on teaching our students about initiative (moving into action) and focus (showing concern for others). Students who complete 4 or more activities and return the form will receive a brag tag.

Color Me Hawesome! Jog-a-thon Presale Tshirts
We have scheduled our Color Me Hawesome jog-a-thon for Friday, February 21 at 1:45. This event will be held at the end of the day due to the nature of this event - a color run! TK students are invited to join us at dismissal and all other grade levels will be ending the day on the field.

Presale t-shirts are available NOW through Sunday, January 19 (one week only). Get yours now as they are only available for ONE week! A portion of the cost of the t-shirt will be returned to the Hawes PTSA!
Register now for after school fee based classes!
If you are interested in registering your child for an afterschool class, registration on 6crickets.com is now open. Classes start this week!
Attendance month 4 - how did we do?
Congratulations to the following classes who had the highest attendance rate at their grade level: TK - Holmes; K - Ortiz; 1st - Ortiz; 2nd - Zeutzius; 3rd - Adams, 4th - Garton; and 5th - Zankich. Our school wide attendance rate for the month was 95.06%, the lowest it has been all year.

A HUGE SHOUT OUT to Mrs. Zeutzius' class for having the highest attendance rate in the school and the ONLY class to met our attendance goal of 98%. Her class is earning a frozen treat party for their accomplishment!

As we look at our chronic absenteeism data, our school wide overall rate is 4.8%, which is lower than last month, but still higher than this time last year. The breakdown by grade level is: TK - 10.6%, K - 7.5%, 1st - 1.5%, 2nd - 3.8%, 3rd - 0%, 4th - 4.6% and 5th - 4.6%.

The California Department of Education looks at this date and includes it in our dashboard, which is published on the CDE website. Data is analyzed by overall performance as well as by specific student groups. Although our overall rating is in the blue, we do have several student groups that fall into the yellow and green categories. It is important for all student groups to decrease chronic absenteeism and move into the blue. I encourage you to check out the link to see learn more!
Independent Study Contracts
If your child is going to be absent from school due to vacation/or travel for four (4) or more days, please contact the school office to request an Independent Study Contract. Please understand that we need at least two weeks prior to the start date of the absence in order to prepare materials. Here are some key points to remember:

  • Independent Study Contracts are requested through Monica Jagiello (mjagiello@hbcsd.us) in the office at least two weeks prior to the absence.
  • By law, the maximum number of days for an independent study are 15 days for the entire school year.
  • In order to receive credit for the absence, ALL work must be completed and returned by the due date..
  • Incomplete independent study contracts result in unexcused absences, which could result in a referral to the Student Attendance and Review Board (SARB).
  • Please be respectful of our teachers and staff who spend a great deal of time putting these contracts together. If you are requesting an independent study contract, please show us the same courtesy by spending the time on helping your child complete and return the assigned work upon his/her return to school.
Absent? Please contact the office
We encourage you to plan your trips over the scheduled breaks we have in place. As well, please make plans for day trips to Disneyland and other places for the weekend. We all understand how difficult it is when we are absent from work and the same holds true for students.

If your child is truly sick, please keep them home to recover. Students must be fever, vomit and diarrhea free for 24 hours prior to returning to school.

If your child is absent from school, please report this absence by emailing: Hawesattendance@hbcsd.us or by calling the school office at: 714.963.8302 then press 1.
